HOW TO OBTAIN AND FILL A KEG
Kegs are easy to obtain. The proper way is to buy one from a liquor supplier, have a party, and drink it down! When you are done you should hold a small ceremony for the keg, as its useful life as a girl catcher has ended.
Another way is to buy an empty from the distributor. This will likely cost you quite a bit. A better way is to go to a liquor supplier after a big weekend and ask if you could have an empty, if you pay the deposit. Most will gladly sell you one. Be sure to go early, before the distributors show up to claim there empties.
The cheapest way is to borrow one from a party. Wait until everyone is passed out or gone home and take a couple! I'd recommend being nice and leaving the tap. The deposit is large on it.
Now that you have the keg, how do you fill it? There are two methods, but first make sure the beer isn't under pressure. If there is very little left, it's likely not under pressure. But always were proper eye protection, just in case.
The first method is useful IF you are only going to add water and are not in a hurry. Just wedge a screw driver into the ball, use a garden hose, and add water. A better method is described below.
In most, maybe all kegs, there are two slots where the tap goes. As shown in the first picture, jam a thin standard screw driver between the outer metal and the steel split ring. You should be able to pop the split ring out without much trouble. It is shown with the pen in the second picture. Then simply lift up and twist the inner portion, with the ball, until the bumps on it line up with the slots and pull it out. You can cut the pipe off leaving only the plug portion. This makes it easier to reinsert the plug, if the keg is full of sand or rocks. Fill it with sand, pea gravel, or whatever. Then replace the plug and split ring.
You can replace the plug with PVC stoppers or other special stoppers. I hope to add some information on which products work best soon.
Happy lifting!
