Hi Coach Rip,

I read in your book that you frown upon lifting in front of mirrors because it's better to "feel the lift". However, until I join a new gym, mirrors are all but inevitable.

Which lifts are okay to do in front of mirrors, and which lifts do you recommend not doing in front of mirrors, and why?

Hi Coach,

As I mentioned earlier, Dr. Stef Bradford told me that motor learning is one of the reasons why it is recommended to not lift in front of mirrors.

I've researched motor learning and I'm not confident on the definition. Can you please explain it to me?

Also, I am taking a Salsa dance class, and we practice the steps in front of mirrors. Does this also interfere with motor learning and kinesthetic sense?

Lastly, training in front of mirrors is certainly better than not training at all? It's just not recommended for optimal performance?

Hi Coach,

I recently read an article on why it is good to "ditch" the mirrors at gyms. I read that using mirrors can slow down the movement of the lift because the visual system is slower than the internal system. If you use the mirror, you double the reaction time because you must see yourself move in the mirror, have that image come back to you, and then correct it.

Do you agree with this research?

Gpcpa zei:
Hi Coach,

Do the mirrors slow the weight training movements down because when the human eye sees a mirror and the reflection comes back, there is a lag time between the visual and the execution of the lift? Is it Science? I saw some research, but the source wasn't too good. I just wanted to clarify with you.
2016 mag niet ontbreken natuurlijk:

Gpcpa zei:
Hi Coach,

I had a discussion with Coach Bradford a few weeks ago about what to do if a lifter has no choice but to look at a mirror while performing a lift. She said, " If you look at a mirror, look at something that is not moving in the mirror, look at that point, and let your vision go out of focus."

Would a good example of her suggestion be to look at the mirror-image of my shoes, (like in a barbell squat), because my shoes aren't moving?

Dear Coach Stef and Coach Rip,

6 months ago I messaged you about the mirrors in the gym and you told me if I had to look at a mirror during a lift, I should focus on a non-moving point in the mirror.

I am still trying to verify with you if my example is congruent with what you advised me. I have a few examples:

1.) Pretend like your looking "through" the mirror, rather than looking at yourself.

2.) Look at a mirror reflection of something like " your shoe" because it isnt' moving.

Do these examples detail my understanding of your previous advice?

Thanks for your help,

Greg
En opnieuw!

Dear Coach Stef,

I know I have asked this question in several variants over the years, but I put a picture of myself in front of a mirror to reinforce my understanding, and I think this could help all members of the strength community. If one were to look at a mirror, the best option would be to look at the Loufa or the stick because they aren't moving. Is this the right assessment of your explanation to me?

Thanks,
