What's unique about the effects of leptin demonstrated in this study is that muscle mass is almost entirely protected while fat mass is reduced dramatically. Under normal situations where calories are restricted, both muscle and fat is lost at about a 50:50 ratio. There are some things that help improve this ratio, such as weight training, androgens, and ephedrine/caffeine. Add Leptin to this mix and who knows, muscle loss while getting ready for a show may be a thing of the past.
The fatter you are the less likely you are to lose muscle when dieting. As you grow leaner, your leptin levels fall and fat cells become more resistant to the idea of meeting all your energy needs themselves. This leaves muscle tissue more and more vulnerable to catabolism the leaner you get.
There are some small steps that a person can take to help to elevate leptin levels. The first thing is to cycle calories. Research has shown that short periods of carbohydrate refeeding temporarily elevate leptin levels. Keep in mind that fatter you are, the more leptin you have. This is because fat cells are acting as glands, being the primary source of leptin for the body. Not only that but a persons leptin levels are directly correlated to the amount of fat they carry. So, periodic refeeding becomes more and more beneficial as you get leaner. As a guess I would say that if you are above 25% body fat, you don't need to refeed. j When you get down to 15% a 24 hour reefed done every two weeks may help you keep more muscle. Then once you hit 10% a weekly reefed is called for. Finally, once you get to about 6-8% a twice weekly refeed might be in order. During refeeding it is important to keep fat low
{helaas, dus niet ongelimiteerd vreten}.
Essential fats such as omega-3s and CLA should probably be the only "intentional" fat during the reefed, maybe some flax too 14 grams or 1 tablespoon.
This is assuming that someone is on a diet in the first place so calories should already be below normal. So they should increase their calories to 16cals/pound. {35 kcal/kg} Just start by eating 1 gram of protein/pound {2,2 g/kg} and then add in the oils, then fill the rest of the calories with carbs, glorious carbs! Good choices are rice, potatoes, whole grain breads, pasta, pretzels or any other low-fat/ low-fructose carb source.
Another thing we can do is to supplement with Zinc and Vitamin E (7,8,9). Now this isn't brain surgery, all you have to do is supplement with Zinc and Vitamin E. How much? Well, take 15-30mg Zinc daily and about 400-800iu Vitamin E. That's it.
You will be hearing a lot more about leptin in the near future. You should know that some people become leptin resistant, much in the same way people are insulin resistant. So research on leptin not only includes how leptin works to reduce body fat, but also on how to get leptin receptors working. The absolutely fundamental role leptin plays in controlling fat loss makes it an inevitable target for drug companies and bodybuilders. Now you can say you knew about leptin long before it became "popular".
