Rumor: Emelianenko and Overeem to Appear in Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Grand Prix
According to Tatame.com, Strikeforce is looking to host a Heavyweight Grand Prix in early 2011. If the Brazilian website’s report holds true, the tournament will house some of the world’s top 265-pounders.
The eight-man tourney is rumored to feature Fedor Emelianenko, Fabrício Werdum, Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Brett Rogers, Andrei Arlovski, Sergei Kharitonov and champion Alistair Overeem.
There was chatter of a Middleweight GP, but Strikeforce reportedly had problems organizing a one-night tournament with most athletic commissions. However, Tatame’s report claims the Grand Prix will take place over three shows, with the semifinal and final rounds marking the San Jose, California-based promotion’s first pay-per-view broadcasts.
Therefore, no contestant will be required to compete more than once in a given night.
Strikeforce hosted a modified women’s tourney back in August. In 2007, they held a four-man middleweight tournament in San Jose.
Although the rumor mill claimed late last week Emelianenko would make his long awaited return against Silva in late January, Team Fedor and Stirkeforce still have not ironed out a contract extension. They have been negotiating for several months to no avail.
It’s likely no significant moves withing Strikeforce’s heavyweight division will take place until the Russian has a new deal in place.
