People who use anabolic steroids are much more likely to commit crimes involving weapons and fraud, a Swedish study says.
Uppsala University researchers studied the link between criminality and steroid use in 1,440 Swedish residents tested for the drugs between 1995 and 2001.
Of those screened, 241 tested positive and 1,199 tested negative and served as controls.
Crimes for which participants were convicted were divided into five categories - violent crime, weapons offenses, property crimes, fraud and coïtusual offenses.
Those who tested positive for steroid use were twice as likely to have been convicted of a weapons crime and 1.5 times as likely to have been found guilty of fraud.
However, both groups had similar rates of convictions for coïtusual offenses, crimes against property and violent crimes.
The use of non-prescription steroids has been linked to changes in behavior and a number of psychiatric conditions, according to the researchers.
"Case reports or survey studies of groups using anabolic androgenic steroids (e.g., bodybuilders) have described hypomania or manic episodes, depression or suicide, psychotic episodes and increased aggressiveness and hostility," the researchers said.
"This aggressiveness appears to occasionally trigger violent behavior, sometimes even including homicide."
The study appears in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Athletes and bodybuilders use anabolic steroids to enhance performance and also to improve physical appearance
The regular use of anabolic steroids can lead to liver failure, severe acne and raised blood pressure.
