Highlander Challenge World Championships: Part Strongman, Part Highland Games, Part History . . . All TV by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2008 IronMind

Douglas Edmunds is returning with the second edition of his Highlander Challenge World Championships - another made-for-television event that features big, strong guys in a contest, and what distinguishes this competition is that it mixes strongman and Highland Games events, in a setting with historical overtones - the pieces are assembled in a package that is intended to be fully engaging for television audiences.

Douglas Edmunds’ Highlander World Championships are set for July 19 - 20. Art courtesy of Douglas Edmunds.

Edmunds has talked about the need to “coïtus up” the Highland Games, and with his experience in professional strongman, it was natural for him to combine the two disciplines, while also drawing liberally from history, with the resulting package clearly aimed to produce the kind of drama that will appeal to television viewers.

The Highlander Games World Championships are set for Scone Palace (Scotland), June 19 - 20.

Highlander Challenge World Championship
19 - 20 July 2008
The Gododdin were a warrior aristocracy drawn mainly from central Scotland 700 years before Wallace's war of independence. They had a unifying purpose amongst the Celtic and Pictish tribes and created an embryonic sense of Scotland as a nation. Legend has it that they would train throughout the winter prior to moving souch to confront massive Anglo forces heading north intent on conquest.
The Highlander Challenge World Championship echoes the war games of our ancestors, particularly the introduction of gladiatorial events from wrestling, shiltron jousting and stone carrying to the traditional throws. Many of the implements have evolved from weapons of war and the rural activities of an ancient culture. A heavy hammer was favoured for crashing through an enemy's armour and what better way to train for wielding a two-handed claymore? The Pics defeated the Romans at Ardoch by throwing flaming spheres. Indeed many an enemy was severely impaired by a hail of miscellaneous missiles before any hand to hand encounter took place.

At the Highlander Challenge battles will be re-enacted and ancient musical instruments will summon the combatants to the games. The gladiatorial events will take place with the stirring war tones of the Clann and Drumma providing a dramatic atmosphere.

The champion will be one of that rare breed who has athletic prowess, super human strength and perhaps, most of all, the courage of a Braveheart. He will be the type of warrior that survived ancient battles. Challengers will come from across the world to vie for the accolade of Chieftain's Champion.

The athletes will be drawn from a pool of National Champions, World Record Holders and Olympians. They will compete in two groups of eight, with the top challengers qualifying for the final.

This major new event will be broadcast over three programmes by Channel 4 Television.

Gates open at 11.30am each day, with the games commencing at 12 noon.

Further information on ticket sales will be posted on this website shortly.
