Mijn achterbuurvrouw is Hongaarse uit Roemenië. Wilt ook niets met die 'domme' Roemenen van doen te hebben.
"In pursuing events on the Eastern front, an increasing war-weariness can be observed in parts of the Romanian Army as well as in the population. This war-weariness is due for one thing to heavy casualties, for another to the frequent and noticeable loss of confidence in the possibility of Russia ever being overpowered. The people have obviously not yet realized the true magnitude of the Bolshevist peril. The masses perceive the war as nothing but a nuisance on account of the numerous restrictions, rising prices, mobilization and bitter losses. They in no way appreciate the magnitude and significance of the war in the East. Thanks to an age-old 'hereditary enmity' nourished down to the present day by Romanian propaganda, Hungary is still viewed as the enemy. Even in the Romanian units fighting in the East, chauvinist elements in the officer corps have made out of the Hungarians as the chief adversary, suggesting that the real purpose of the Romanian fight in the East is the eventual reintegration of their detached territory - as a thank-you, so to say, for Romanian assistance."
From a report of the German General in the High Command of the Romanian Army on 5 March 1943
