UFC reveals plans in works to showcase stars in upcoming fights
Four matches involving eight of Ultimate Fighting Championship’s biggest stars - including heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and No. 1 contender Alistair Overeem - are in the company's immediate plans, according to UFC chief executive officer Lorenzo Fertitta.
Interacting with fans during a late-night chat on Twitter, Fertitta said UFC is targeting Memorial Day weekend for dos Santos, in his first title defence, to take on Overeem. UFC recently reserved MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 26 for what is expected to be UFC 146, the company’s annual May long weekend event in Las Vegas.
Dos Santos defeated Cain Velasquez in UFC’s network debut on Fox. With a viewing audience that peaked at nearly nine million people, it is the most watched mixed martial arts bout in North American history. Overeem, meanwhile, won his UFC debut in December, scoring a technical knockout over former champion Brock Lesnar.
Also in the works, said Fertitta, is a bantamweight title bout between champion Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber, a heavyweight match between former champions Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir, and the rubber match between ex-light heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin.
According to a Fertitta tweet, the Faber-Cruz grudge match — the two are 1-1 against each other — is happening on July 7 at an event likely to be dubbed UFC 148, the company’s traditional Fourth of July long weekend event in Las Vegas. UFC has reserved the MGM Grand for that date. The buildup for that match will begin March 9, as the two coach opposing teams on the 15th season of UFC’s reality-TV show, The Ultimate Fighter.
Faber defeated Cruz via submission in 2007 when the two competed in World Extreme Cagefighting. Cruz gained some revenge last year, winning a unanimous decision at UFC 132 in one of the best contests of 2011.
Fertitta did not hint at any date or event at which Velasquez-Mir or Griffin-Ortiz would take place. There are plenty of possibilities, however, as UFC has several pay-per-views or network broadcasts in the near future. On May 5 in East Rutherford, N.J., UFC returns to Fox for its third network event; UFC 146 follows on May 26; an as-yet-unannounced UFC 147 is likely to take place sometime in June; the Fourth of July long weekend card is usually one of UFC’s most loaded; and UFC on Fox 4 is set for Aug. 4 from Los Angeles on network television.
Mir and Velasquez are both attempting to get back into the heavyweight title picture. Mir, who held the belt in 2004 and the interim championship in 2008-09, has won three fights in a row, beating Roy Nelson, Mirko Cro Cop and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Velasquez has struggled with injuries recently, requiring shoulder surgery after winning the title from Brock Lesnar in 2010 and suffering a knee injury prior to his title loss last November to dos Santos.
Ortiz and Griffin seemingly get together every three years to settle any differences. In 2006, Ortiz won their first encounter via split decision. In the 2009 rematch, Griffin was awarded the split decision. A rubber match has long been rumoured, and Ortiz has said it will likely be the last of his legendary career.
