Top UFC heavyweight contender predicted finish of Lesnar

Both Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar had been saying going into their UFC 141 main event that it was destined to be just a one- or two-round fight. But Overeem admitted Friday night he took it one step farther.

The former Strikeforce heavyweight champion landed a devastating left kick to Lesnar's right side, watched the former UFC champ crumple, then pounced on him to finish him on the ground midway through the first round. And after the fight, Overeem said it went precisely as he said it would.

"I predicted it the evening before to my fiancee," Overeem said at the post-fight press conference at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. "I said, 'First I'm going to do this, then I'm going to do that, and I'm going to finish it with a liver kick.' I don't know if it's luck or it's strategy. But it turned out that way, and I'm just happy that it did."

"Happy" might be an understatement. Overeem was making his UFC debut, and had faced the scrutiny of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which only granted him a conditional license for the fight, pending the results of two upcoming random drug screenings, and an additional screening that he needed to submit as soon as he landed in the United States for the fight. He is in the middle of dealing with a cancer-stricken mother in Holland. And he had more than his fair share of detractors going into the fight – including his boss, UFC president Dana White.

But with a first-round TKO over Lesnar that Overeem made look fairly academic, he took the first step toward proving some of his doubters wrong – and earned a title shot against current champ Junior dos Santos.

"Let me say in front of everybody here that I was wrong," White said after the fight. "I said it before Alistair came into the UFC, and I said it leading up to this fight to myself because I never give predictions (publicly). But I thought Brock Lesnar was going to beat Alistair Overeem tonight. I did. I was wrong, and he looked damned good tonight. He made quick work of Brock Lesnar."

Not only did Overeem make quick work of him, he sent him into retirement. The former NCAA wrestling champion and former WWE pro wrestling superstar announced after the fight he was calling it quits. And that's something Overeem said he's not on board with, even if White is.

"I think he shouldn't walk away," Overeem said. "Love him or hate him, it's always something when Brock's fighting. He's a guy who goes for it. I think he achieved a lot in a short span. It would be a shame if he stops now. I think there's still more to gain for him."

Overeem said he hopes to take some time off to get some affairs in order, including, likely, a pending lawsuit from his former management team, Golden Glory, which reports have said successfully lobbied in Nevada to have his fight purse garnished from the win over Lesnar – expected to be nearly $400,000.

But after that, he'll have an even bigger UFC test on his hands, considering he'll be fighting dos Santos for the biggest prize in mixed martial arts.

"I can only say I was very motivated," Overeem said. "I just wanted to get in there and show everybody, show the world, that I'm ready. And that I'm coming. Junior dos Santos is a very different fighter, so the game plan will be very different. ... I'd like to have a nice long holiday, and arrange some stuff or get some stuff in order. So maybe (fight dos Santos) before the end of summer. I think everybody's excited for this fight, and so am I."

We wachten af.

Dos Santos doesn't need that much time to be ready for "The Reem."

Dos Santos doesn't need that much time to be ready for "The Reem."

The UFC heavyweight champion today called into MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio), where he assured fans that a recent knee injury won't keep him out of action for long.

"In another 20 days, I'll be feeling 100 percent again," Dos Santos said. "Then I need two-and-a-half (months) to do my camp, and then I'm ready to do."

Dos Santos suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee less than two weeks before his title-winning knockout of Cain Velasquez this past November at UFC on FOX 1. He initially thought the injury wouldn't require surgery, but this past month he underwent a procedure to correct the damage.

Now, the champ is rearing to go. UFC president Dana White recently said an expected fight between Dos Santos (14-1 MMA, 8-0 UFC) and No. 1 contender Alistair Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will take place this summer. Dos Santos said he'd ideally like to fight at an event planned for June in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which is a two-hour flight from his home in the Brazilian town of Salvador.

"It's a good chance to fight for Brazilian fans," he said. "MMA is very popular here in Brazil now. I would love to fight here. But the important thing is I want to make all my fans around the world watch good fights when I get in that octagon. So I will try to do my best. It doesn't matter whether it's [in Brazil] or the United States."

Overeem earned a title shot this past month with a first-round TKO of former champ Brock Lesnar. While Dos Santos' boxing skills so far have proven him unbeatable inside the octagon, he admitted it would be prudent to take the fight to the mat.

"I think for sure the fight between me and Alistair is going to be a standup fight," he said. "But if I feel I have to take him down and use my jiu-jitsu to beat him, I will do that. I've never showed my jiu-jitsu in the UFC, and this one's a good opportunity.

"But I don't care if he's the champ of K-1. I'm the UFC heavyweight champion, and I believe I can beat anyone in the world."

Check back with MMAjunkie.com for an update on the heavyweight title fight as it becomes available.

Dos Santos wants Overeem in Brazil

Junior dos Santos says he is '10 days away' from reaching full fitness, and the reigning heavyweight champion is hopeful a showdown with Alistair Overeem can be held in his native Brazil later in the year.

Dos Santos suffered a knee injury in training prior to his fight with then-champion Cain Velasquez in November and, despite battling through the pain to claim the belt, the 27-year-old is only now returning to peak fitness.

"I'm feeling great about my knee already. I think another 10 days I'll be 100-percent," Dos Santos said on the UFC 142 Rio post-fight show on Fuel TV.

"I'm training boxing, I'm lifting weights, but I can't train jiu-jitsu yet. But I think another 10 days and I'll be training normally again."

Dos Santos - who says he is three months away from being able to compete again - is lining up a title defence against Overeem, who beat Brock Lesnar last month at UFC 141. A soccer stadium in Sao Paulo has been tipped to host the clash, most likely in June, and dos Santos is excited by the prospect of fighting on home soil.

"It could be amazing for me to defend my title here in Brazil," he said. "It could be special. But it doesn't matter where. I know it will be against Alistair Overeem, so I'm just waiting for the date of my fight now."

JDS is een uitstekende vechter maar Overeem pakt m wel. Een uitstekende bokser zijn is leuk, maar met een Nederlandse Kickbokser is het een ander verhaal als met een Amerikaanse kickbokser natuurlijk.

Bas Rutten Picks Dos Santos to Beat Overeem

Former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten believes current champ Junior dos Santos will beat Alistair Overeem if they fight this year.

In an interview with the Sherdog Radio Network’s “It’s Time!” show with Bruce Buffer, the colorful MMA personality gave his thoughts on the matchup and a variety of other topics, including his Fuel TV show “Punk Payback” and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos’ positive test for an anabolic steroid.

Rutten on telling Overeem’s camp which opponents could make for difficult matchups: “I always told them … make sure to avoid Junior dos Santos. I think him and Cain Velasquez, although with Cain, he cannot take a punch too great. But still, Cain is a monster and he should have simply shot in on Junior dos Santos, I think. I actually thought he was going to win that fight, but he didn’t. He got tagged, and that can happen to anybody. Anyway, I always said try to stay away as long as you can from Junior dos Santos. That right now could be a very big threat together, believe it or not, with Cheick Kongo. I think that would also be a great opponent for him.”

On how Overeem matches up with dos Santos: “I think Alistair, everything he does is one single shot because he knows he’s got that glass jaw as well. He’s been knocked out quite a few times in the past, even by Chuck Liddell as well. Every time when he punches, one hand is up. He throws single shots; he doesn’t throw combinations. You saw that when he fought [Fabricio] Werdum. Werdum was actually tagging him more than he did to Werdum. I think that Junior dos Santos, with his combinations, his reach, I think he’s going to tag him and he’s going to throw combos and I think that yeah, he’s going to take this fight.”

Alistair Overeem Says He is Better Than Junior Dos Santos
January 24, 2012 – 11:25 am by Chris Fedor

The last time he was inside the cage, Alistair Overeem was busy roughing up Brock Lesnar and forcing him into early retirement. The world-class kickboxer was just too much for the former UFC Heavyweight Champ. Now that he has gotten past Lesnar, Overeem will get a shot at Junior Dos Santos’ Heavyweight Title. The giant Overeem hasn’t lost a fight since 2007, he packs a wallop, and is one of the most dangerous heavyweights in the UFC. If he finds a way to stop Dos Santos, which nobody in the UFC has been able to do, he will add a fourth title belt to his collection.

Alistair Overeem joined XX 1090 in San Diego with Scott and BR to talk about whether or not he was always as big as he is now, if there was any bad blood between Brock Lesnar and himself prior to the fight, what he thinks of Brock Lesnar as a fighter, and how different the attention is that he gets now after beating Lesnar.

Whether or not he was always as big as he is now:

“I started out as a light heavyweight. Actually my first fight when I was 17-years-old was a kickboxing fight in a really small gym and I didn’t get paid for it. I was a middleweight. I was I think 187 pounds. (Host: you were 187 pounds at 17-years-old?) Yeah. (Host: And you’re now 260?) Yeah between 260 and 275. I kept growing. Basically when I was 20 I was a heavyweight and then I signed with Pride, back then the biggest organization in the world and they started to weight categories because before it was just open weight. Anything goes. I was like okay I’m not really a big heavyweight because really big heavyweights back then were 260, 280, even 300, or 320 pounds so I was first going to cut weight to light heavyweight and basically fight everybody there, get all the experience, get all the technique because at the time that was a harder weight class and then I’m going to go all in in the heavyweight class. That’s basically what I did. I fought everybody at light heavyweight. Won a couple and lost a couple. My best achievement was being 3rd in the light heavyweight Grand Prix in 2005. Then I lost to Shogun, lost to Little Nog, and then I got some injuries and was like you know what? It’s time to step it up a little bit. We’re gonna go to heavyweight.”

If there was any bad blood between him and Lesnar before their fight:

“No. Not at all. I respect Brock for what he did. Great for the sport, great for the UFC, and I mean he came in there with minimum experience and he took on the strongest heavyweights in the world and he beat them and he became champion. That is something that I think earns respect and admiration. He pulled it off. Now it’s come a time where his game needed to be upgraded and he didn’t upgrade it in time. Then you’re going to fall to other fighters because the sport is always adapting and always changing.”

On Brock Lesnar as a fighter:

“He is what I call one-dimensional, but a very good one-dimensional. I think he’s like 275 pounds of mass coming at you with violence, taking you down and doing his thing so he was really good at what he did but the problem with him is if you’re too one dimensional people are really clever and catch up because there are certain ways to beat certain opponents. That’s one of my strengths. I always change, I always adapt, I always improve.”

Whether or not the attention on him has picked up since his last win over Lesnar:

“Definitely yes. There’s a lot of attention now and capitalizing while I can. The next fight is going to be for the title. I’m now a title contender for the UFC, which is going to be my fourth belt.”

When he thinks the fight with Junior Dos Santos will be:

“I think it’s going to happen sooner rather than later.”

What his strategy will be against Dos Santos:

“There’s different ways to beat Dos Santos. Basically the way I see it is I’m bigger, I’m more experienced, I’m better, better in the stand-up, better on the ground, and obviously he’s a very dangerous opponent but there’s so many ways to beat him. I still have to sit down and study him a little bit but anything is possible with him.”

Overeem wint.
