Seal causes traffic chaos after washing onto busy road
A stray seal caused chaos for motorists after it washed onto a busy road in Blackbridge, Pembrokeshire, during the morning rush hour
A seal caused traffic chaos when it was washed onto a busy road during the morning rush hour today.
The 'extremely aggressive' animal was swept onto land from the sea in the storms - and stayed put on the road.
Drivers spotted the seal along a busy road in Blackbridge near Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, at about 9am.
Police and animal rescuers holding riot shields tried to usher the male seal back towards the water after shutting the road, but they found it was being 'uncooperative'.
Terry Leadbetter, of Welsh Marine Life Rescue, said: 'When I arrived the seal was on the footpath heading towards town.
'We couldn't understand how it got there. We assumed it must have been washed through the sluice into the overflow lake on the opposite side to Castle Pill. The police seemed to be in a bit of a panic, not knowing what to do.'
He said rescuers had difficulty trying to guide the animal away from the road - describing it as 'extremely aggressive'.
Mr Leadbetter added: 'There was nowhere nearby, we thought, that we could get it back in. There was a track further up the road which led down to the water so we tried to usher it the footpath.
'It was extremely aggressive and not very cooperative. I was aided by a large baffle board with another person who had a small 2ft square riot shield.'
The seal was eventually herded onto banking around Castle Pill, where it then plunged 20ft into the water before swimming away unharmed.
A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: 'We were called to the incident. The seal was back in the water aided by Welsh Marine Life Rescue by 9:38am.'
