Op de een of andere manier in mijn wijk zie ik nooit meer mussen. Vroeger waar ik geboren ben halve km verderop stikte het van de mussen. Nu alleen nog maar meesjes en kauwen

It was Louis Réard, in 1946, who designed the bikini. The name was inspired by the Bikini Atoll, in which at that time had been at that time atomic tests had been carried out.
Réard himself would later describe his invention as a "two-piece costume that reveals everything about a girl except her mother's maiden name."

The bikini was long banned on beaches and in public places in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Australia, and some American states. The Vatican branded it as sinful.

It was Hollywood stars who fought at the forefront of the battle for its dissemination.

In the 1950s Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Tina Louise, Marilyn Monroe, Esther Williams, and Betty Grable took advantage of the publicity to spread the cause of the bikini throughout the United States.

Finally, between the late 1950s and early 1970s it was legalized and by the end of the century it became the most popular all over the world.
