There are two kinds of people in the fitness industry: those that give you advice and motivate you, so that you will buy their product, and those that give you advice, because you paid them for it.
Nah, that’s just the cynic in me talking. Cynicism can be a good thing though: it allows you to be objective. And that’s exactly what I’m going to do in this article. I’m going to give you an unbiased review of the vast literature on the optimal nutrients to consume around your training sessions. This article will deal with carbohydrates and protein. Future articles will cover other more ‘exotic’ stuff to put in your shakes. At the end of this article series, you’ll have a scientific recipe for the muscle maximizing workout shake.
But wait, you already know this. It’s something like 50g of super fast acting protein, preferably hydrolyzed whey, with 200g of a 50:50 mixture of dextrose and maltodextrin, 5g of BCAAs and 5g of creatine, consumed right after the workout. Wrong. About everything except the creatine.
