De Niro and Scorsese return on Frankie Machine

Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese are set to team up again for another two films, and the first of those is underway. Entitled Frankie Machine, it is adapted from the book by Don Winslow.

The Winter of Frankie Machine (Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk) is the novel which tells the story of Frankie Machine, a retired hitman with a successful business and a new life away from the mob. One day the local boss calls on him for a favour, a favour he has to deliver, and then he's "sucked right back in".

According to Deadline Hollywood through JoBlo the Ocean's Thirteen scriptwriters Brian Koppelman and David Levien have written the screenplay for Martin Scorcese. They also report that back during the promotions of The Good Shepherd, Robert De Niro had said that he'd like to do ten films with Scorsese, and as of now they've only completed eight.

Looks like this is the next one that will return them both to the world of organised crime. Welcome back guys, I think we're all going to be very excited about this one. Now what could the tenth be? Just be thankful that De Niro is not heading for any more flat, base, comedies.

Een ex-gangster en huurmoordenaar Frank Machianno, bijgenaamd Frankie Machine, komt na een lange periode in de gevangenis eindelijk vrij. Frankie Machine leeft in vrede ergens in San Diego, maar wanneer de zoon van een gewezen maffiabaas tijdens een ruzie met de baas van Detroit zijn hulp inroept, wordt hij verplicht dat vredige leventje achter te laten. Maar wanneer Frankie Machine terugkeert naar het gangstermilieu, ontdekt hij dat hij doelwit is van een aanslag. Frankie Machine heeft nu nog maar één missie: ontdekken wie hem wou vermoorden.

Fans van Robert De Niro zijn blij dat hij nog eens in de huid zal kruipen van een gangster, een rol die hem op het lijf geschreven is. Andere bekende gangsterfilms met De Niro zijn Mean Streets, Heat, Goodfellas, The Godfather Part II en Casino.

Het scenario van de film werd geschreven door David Levien en Brian Koppelman en werd gebaseerd op het boek van Don Winslow.
De Niro is ook producer van de film

In 1955 kroop Frank Sinatra ook al eens in de huid van het personage Frankie Machine, in de film The Man with the Golden Arm. Sinatra kreeg zelfs een Oscar-nominatie voor zijn vertolking.

Martin Scorsese en De Niro werkten eerder al samen aan Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, New York, New York, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Cape Fear en Casino.

Volgens enkele bronnen zou het Robert De Niro zelf geweest zijn die Martin Scorsese kon overtuigen om plaats te nemen in de regiestoel

Paramount Pictures has teamed up with Heat director Michael Mann to make Frankie Machine starring Robert De Niro. According to Variety, De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's company Tribeca Films will produce the project.

De Niro will play Frank Machianno, an ex hit man whose brought out of retirement at his bait shop to settle some unfinished business and to save his own skin. De Niro has been attached to this project since the rights to Don Winslow's novel "The Winter of Frankie Machine" were bought by Paramount.
