On Washington's hacking hysteria – what would Freud say?

Nooit iets positiefs over Frankrijk. Trots zijn op je land mag niet.”

‘Return’ of Crimea is impossible'
In reply to statements that Kiev has a plan to regain control over Donbass and Crimea, Russian Senator Aleksey Pushkov stated that the scenario was absolutely impossible.

“Avakov has reported that Kiev has a plan to regain Crimea and Donbass, but he has not revealed its essence. Crimea definitely cannot be returned now, with or without a plan,” Pushkov wrote in his Twitter microblog.

The statement came in reply to the words of Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, who told 1+1 TV about the alleged plan for “restoring Ukrainian territorial integrity” through diplomacy and without military action.

Earlier this month, Western media circulated a report about Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Artemenko and his proposal to normalize Russia-Ukraine relations through an agreement by which Russia would rent Crimea from Ukraine on a long-term basis. Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov called the idea “absurd,” and denied that Moscow had ever had negotiations on the agreement.

Pushkov also commented on a Facebook post from the weekend in which Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko promised “not to leave without support” Ukrainian citizens in Crimea. The Russian senator tweeted that the Ukrainian leader had fully demonstrated what he meant by “support” in the war-torn regions of Lugansk and Donetsk, and that hardly anyone in Crimea would wish to repeat what happened in eastern Ukraine. Pushkov added that Crimeans had experienced what Kiev means by “care” when they suffered from energy and trade blockades imposed after its reunification with Russia.

The Crimean Republic reunited with the Russian Federation in mid-2014, after over 96 percent of its residents, the majority of whom are ethnic Russians, approved the move in a referendum. The decision was prompted by the ouster of the democratically-elected president of Ukraine in a violent coup in Kiev, and the installation of a nationalist-backed government that almost immediately declared war on the pro-Russia regions in the country’s southeast, which refused to recognize the newly imposed regime.

A poll conducted on the second anniversary of the reunification in June 2016 showed that 95 percent of the people living in Crimea said that they would support the republic’s accession to the Russian Federation if a referendum was held again. Only two percent of those polled said they would not support reunification. Three percent of Crimeans and four percent of Sevastopol residents found the question too complex to answer.

In the same poll, Crimeans were asked if they were satisfied with the general situation in their region. Seventy-six percent answered “yes,” of which 34 percent were “very certain” about it.

The Kremlin Is Reportedly Abandoning Its Red Square Concert to Celebrate the Annexation of Crimea
That large concert in downtown Moscow celebrating the annexation of Crimea isn’t happening this year, according to the TV station Dozhd. The city is reportedly moving the festivities to another location, or perhaps canceling the show altogether.

Following personnel changes in Putin’s administration, the authorities want to avoid the traffic congestion and excessive “officialdom” of past celebrations, three sources told Dozhd.

For the past two years, Moscow has staged a grand concert on March 18 to mark Crimea’s reabsorption into Russia. More than 100,000 people have filled Red Square, where popular musicians perform, and Vladimir Putin addresses the crowd. Last year, the president didn’t make it in person, appearing instead by satellite link, in a video beamed from Crimea.

On the condition of anonymity, three sources — one in the Kremlin, one close to the mayor’s office, and another close to the State Duma — told Dozhd that this celebration scheme is being abandoned this year as too costly and too orchestrated by the state.

Dozhd says there will probably still be a concert this year, but it won’t likely take place in central Moscow. Expect future festivities to be less organized and involve more young people, sources told the TV station. Kremlin officials have reportedly been talking to student groups at Moscow State University, which could become the new epicenter for celebrating the annexation of Crimea, Dozhd says.

Russian military will leave Kyrgyzstan when no longer needed for regional stability
The Russian military presence in Central Asia is crucial for regional stability, according to President Vladimir Putin, but Moscow is ready to leave at the first request after it helps to strengthen the Kyrgyzstan army to be capable of maintaining security on its own.
Russia is both ready to abandon its military base in Kyrgyzstan or to reinforce it, Putin said in the aftermath of talks with his Kyrgyz counterpart Almazbek Atambayev in Bishkek on Tuesday.

“When Kyrgyzstan decides that it has strengthened its armed forces so that it no longer needs this base, we will pull out immediately,” Putin [Link niet meer beschikbaar]. “We did not discuss expanding the Russian military group here. If Kyrgyzstan decides that this is necessary, we will discuss this issue, but you should know that this will entail additional spending for us.”

The Russian military came to Kyrgyzstan at the beginning of the 2000s following an urgent request from the country’s authorities, who faced an “international terrorism” threat from militants infiltrating the country from Afghanistan.

The main Russian military facility in the country is the Kant Air Base, housing Su-25 ground attack planes and Mi-8 military transport helicopters. The air force at the base is a part of the Collective Rapid Reaction Force, the joint task force of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Putin said the military presence in the country is not a goal for Russia but that it contributes significantly to the stability of the whole region of Central Asia.

The two leaders also discussed the development of the Kyrgyz armed forces and Russian military aid. “What we did mention during the talks was strengthening Kyrgyzstan’s army and armed forces, stepping up supplies of weapons, equipment,” Atambayev said. “Russia wants to help us strengthen our own armed forces.”

The two leaders further agreed to expand military and technical cooperation in order to fight terrorism, the drug trade, and cross-border organized crime; among the pressing issues which are plaguing the Central Asia region.

Apart from military cooperation, the two leaders also discussed joint business projects, particularly, Russian participation Kyrgyzstan’s gasification program. Russia plans to invest 100 billion rubles ($1.7 billion) into the country’s natural gas distribution system, and the project is expected to raise Kyrgyzstan’s gasification level to 60 percent from the current 22 percent.

Putin traveled to Kyrgyzstan following visits to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, two other Central Asia states also considered to be Moscow's strategic partners in the region.

“In all these countries, Russia ranks first in terms of bilateral trade and, despite current economic headwinds, Russia has retained this position,” Putin said.

The three Central Asian countries are members of the CSTO and Russia seeks to strengthen joint efforts in battling terrorism and organized crime. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are also members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and according to Putin, the growing economies and industries in these countries indicate that the cooperation is actually effective.

Russian Foreign Minister Calls Washington's Russia Scandal a 'Witch Hunt'
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has harshly criticized the current focus on U.S. officials' contacts with the Russia's ambassador in Washington, describing the situation as a "witch hunt."

Lavrov went on to compare the discussions of the ambassadors contacts to "McCarthyism" — a reference to Joseph McCarthy, a U.S. Senator who spearheaded a deeply destructive investigation into the alleged communist sympathies of American public figures in the 1950s.

"If the same principle were applied to the activities of [U.S.] Ambassador [John] Tefft in the Russian Federation and his contacts, then I assure you, it would be a very funny picture, " Lavrov added.

Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak has become a central figure in the political scandal surrounding the Donald Trump administration's contacts with Russia. Last month, Trump's national security advisor, Gen. Michael Flynn, resigned after it was revealed that he had concealed information about his communications with Amb. Kislyak during the election.

This week, the U.S. Justice Department announced that Attorney General Jeff Sessions failed to disclose two previous meetings with Kislyak in his confirmation hearing. During the hearing, Sessions told the Senate that there were no contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

Kislyak also met with Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor. J.D. Gordon, the Trump campaign's director of national security, and Carter Page, who was on the campaign's national security advisory committee, also met with Kislyak. In September, Page left the Trump campaign following controversy over a speech he gave in Moscow.

Demonization of Russia an ‘insult to Americans'
The head of the Russian Upper House has dismissed the unfounded allegations of clandestine Russian attempts to influence foreign elections as ‘absurd,’ adding that claims like this are an insult to the American people, who freely made their choice.
We have never interfered with internal affairs or affected the internal political situation in foreign nations, in countries such as Germany and France. This is simply absurd; it cannot be perceived without humor,” Valentina Matviyenko said during her Tuesday meeting with the head of the Defense and Foreign Affairs Commission of the French Senate, Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

Matviyenko said that the accusations of Russian interference in the US presidential election completely lacked any proof, and are an insult to the American people, who had made their own free choice in the election.

The top Russian senator called the forthcoming French election “an important political event for Europe and for the world as a whole,” and assured French politicians that Russia would cooperate with any leader elected by the French people.

Matviyenko also told French lawmakers that she personally considered it shortsighted to allow the Russophobic campaigns and demonization of Russia to influence people’s opinions.

Senior Russian officials have repeatedly dismissed accusations of meddling in and “hacking” foreign elections, made by foreign politicians and intelligence agencies.

In January, Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow was “seriously tired of these accusations,” adding that the persistent campaign “truly is reminiscent of a witch hunt.”

From our point of view, groundless accusations backed by nothing sound, fairly amateur, on an emotional level… can hardly apply to the highly-professional work of truly highly-qualified intelligence agencies,” Peskov told reporters, commenting on the report by the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) titled ‘Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections.’

The unclassified version of the report accused Russia of aiding the victory of Donald Trump, at the same time acknowledging that “Russian intervention” did not, in the end, affect the outcome. The report also failed to provide any concrete evidence of Russian interference.

Belarus Accuses Russia of Violating Treaties With New Border Controls
Belarus hasaccused the Kremlin of building a new border zone between the two former Soviet states without notifying the Belarusian government.

Maria Vanshina, spokesperson Belarussian Foreign Ministry, said that Russia's decision to reenforce the border broke legal agreements between the two nations.

She warned Russian officials that many Belarussians see the move as a step to reintroducing full migration controls across the border.

The head of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) signed an order introducing border controls in Russia's Bryansk, Smolensk and Pskov regions on Feb. 1. The controls are set to come into force Feb. 7.

Konstantin Kosachev, the head of Russia's Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, stood by the decision. He said the border areas are necessary to properly vet travelers from outside Belarus and Russia.

"We are talking about the citizens of third countries, such as neighboring Ukraine,” he said. “This change is designed ensure that the Russian border here works as it does elsewhere, not to place stress on our relationship with Belarus.”

Russian and Belarusian citizens have had the right to live and work in either country without formal migration controls since 1996. Both nations went on to enter a customs union in 2010, virtually erasing the border between the two countries.

The soft border has become an increasingly attractive target for smugglers seeking to cash in on Russian sanctions against the EU, sneaking embargoed Western food products into Russia via Belarus.

Tension between the countries also escalated after Aleksander Lukashenko, Belarus' long-time president, signed a decree allowing the citizens of the EU, the United States and 41 other states to visit Belarus for up to five days without a visa. The decree only applies to foreigners arriving in Belarus via Minsk Airport, and only if they have not arrived on a flight from Moscow.
Russia Cracks Down on Belarusian Food Imports
Russian officials could soon start targeting Belarusian cheese in a new crackdown on food imports.

State agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor announced on Friday that two major cheese factories had received official warnings over the use of the preservative natamycin.

The Rogachev and Oshmiany cheese factories will see their products barred from Russia if inspectors find further violations, Russian tabloid Izvestia reported Friday

Russia announced last month that it would start tracking all Belarusian food imports as they crossed the border in a bid to “boost food quality.”

It is also seen as a way of fighting smugglers seeking to cash in on Russian sanctions against the EU by sneaking embargoed Western food products into Russia using Belarusian documents.

The phenomenon has led to several “miracle harvests,” with Belarus exporting five times more apples in 2015 than the country officially harvested.

The head of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) also signed an order introducing stricter border controls in Russia's Bryansk, Smolensk and Pskov regions at the start of February.

Minsk has repeatedly denied allegations of widespread smuggling and sub-standard produce, instead claiming that below-par products are being loaded onto Belarusian import trucks within Russia itself.

Critics also claim that the increased border controls breaks existing treaties and will harm Russian-Belarusian ties.
